Backup Power for Aging Parents & Elderly at Home

A power outage is a manageable inconvenience for most households. For an elderly parent living alone, it can become a medical emergency within hours.

The Situation

The Risk Is Real — and Often Underestimated

Extreme heat or cold without HVAC, a stair lift that won't operate, a medical alert system that goes dark, medications that require refrigeration — these aren't hypothetical concerns. They're the realities families face every time a storm rolls through the Carolinas. A whole-home backup power system removes every one of these risks automatically, without requiring your parent to do anything.

How Fortress Protects Elderly Residents

1

Automatic Standby Generator

A Generac or Kohler standby generator activates within seconds of a grid failure — no manual start, no extension cords, no action required from your parent. HVAC, lighting, refrigeration, and medical devices stay on without interruption.

2

Battery Backup for Critical Loads

Tesla Powerwall and Enphase battery systems provide instant, zero-gap power to priority circuits — medical equipment, bedroom lighting, and communication devices — even before the generator starts.

3

Intelligent Monitoring

Fortress monitoring systems alert our service team — and you — the moment anything changes. You can check system status from your phone at any time, giving you peace of mind even when you're not there.

Surge Protection

When power restores after an outage, voltage spikes can damage sensitive medical equipment and home electronics. Whole-home surge protection guards every device in the house.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my parent need to do anything when the power goes out?

Nothing at all. An automatic standby generator detects the outage and starts within 10 seconds — entirely on its own. Your parent may not even notice the power went out.

What happens to a stair lift or elevator during an outage?

Most residential stair lifts and elevators require utility power to operate. A whole-home generator keeps them running normally. We can also prioritize those circuits in the load management configuration.

How long will the generator run?

A natural gas or propane standby generator runs as long as fuel is available — typically indefinitely on natural gas, or 3–7 days on a standard propane tank. Fortress designs fuel storage for your specific runtime requirements.

Can I monitor the system remotely?

Yes. Fortress installs remote monitoring on every system. You receive alerts by text or email if the generator starts, if fuel is low, or if any issue is detected — so you always know your parent's home is protected.

Is installation disruptive to my parent's daily routine?

Most installations are completed in one to two days. Our crews work efficiently and cleanly, and we schedule around your parent's routine. The system is fully automatic once installed — no ongoing action required.
